Preventing the Endless Scroll
It sounds like a children's fantasy book, but "endless scroll" is shorthand for social media's constant content. We are all finding ourselves spending too much time scrolling. Scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, or endless YouTube videos is practically a national past-time now – we are all guilty of it.
Now more than ever, our country is feeling the effects of this upcoming election. We're feeling scared, anxious, and maybe even a little upset. Endless scrolling doesn't help. It feels like a temporary distraction, but it is feeding all of those negative emotions.
How can we hit pause—even for a moment— to escape the scroll?
Here is a list compiled of different strategies to help us get our minds off of the election scares and C19 jitters:
· Set some boundaries. Instead of waking up and going straight to your phone, try and take some time to put the intention for your day. Make your bed, enjoy that warm cup of coffee. Set a time for you to check your phone and catch yourself up with missed notifications, and then put that phone back down and tackle the day!
· Don't sleep next to your phone. To avoid waking up and immediately indulging in social media, try putting your phone elsewhere. Put it further from your bed or in another room altogether. This will help to get you in the groove of breaking the scrolling habit.
· Be mindful. When scrolling through your desired apps, could you pay attention to how they make you feel? If you're finding yourself becoming anxious while scrolling—listen to yourself. To break this addiction, try turning your notifications off. Even better, try deleting the app! If you begin to feel better once doing this, you'll know it's working.
· Pick up a new hobby! Have you had any books or movies you've been eager to try but couldn't find the time? Try swapping your scrolling time for some personal time. Read a book, watch a movie, catch up with friends, go for a walk. These small activities can make a big difference in your daily life.
